The History of Disc Golf

Official Rules and Techniques of Disc Golf

Disc golf, or frolf, is a fun and popular hybrid combination of golf and Frisbee.  As with any sport, there are particular rules that must be followed by players participating in the game.  If you want to become an active disc golf player, you should familiarize yourself with the rules and techniques employed by advanced players.

The Professional Disc Golfer’s Association (PDGA) has all of the rules indicated on their website.  The rules of the association would need to be followed if you would like to play in professional tournaments.

  • Begin your round of disc golf by teeing off.  This is similar to teeing off in regular golf where there is a designated area in which you make your first drive.  In disc golf, you must stand behind the tee box in order for your first throw to be considered valid.

  • Ensure that when throwing, your front foot does not pass the lie.  Wherever your disc lands after your throw is called the lie.  If you pass the front edge of your lie, a penalty throw is incurred.  As the object of the game is to finish the course with as few throws as possible, you will want to keep penalties to a minimum.

  • Account for pull from your dominant arm.  It is natural for a right handed thrower to have their disk pull right, and for a left handed thrower to pull left.  As you make your throws on the course, correct for this pull by aiming slightly to the right or left, depending on your dominant arm.

  • Complete all of your throws while ensuring that your Frisbee stays within the bounds of the disc golf course.  When playing on an official disc golf course, the course bounds will be clearly marked.  If your Frisbee lands out of bounds, or on a water hazard or barrier, you must add a penalty throw to your total score.
