Locksmith Job Description

A locksmith is a trained professional who can install, repair, adjust and open locks. He does this through the use of hand tools, some which are specialized. A large portion of a locksmith’s day is spent opening up locked doors for their customers. A locksmith’s training is on the job or through various courses and generally takes anywhere from a couple of months to a year.

Although a large part of a locksmith’s day is spent unlocking doors for people he does other tasks as well, such as:

• Cutting keys: A locksmith cuts keys for customers, including large businesses. People need keys cut for all types of items, such as cars, filing cabinets, cupboards, doors and more. Some of the locksmith’s customers are people who maintain large corporations and need a secure system.


• Installation: Installing new locks and hardware is a major aspect of a locksmith’s job.


• Opening locks: A locksmith gets many calls each day from people who lock themselves out. He responds and succeeds in helping them gain entry.


• Repairs: A locksmith is able to repair all components of hardware in a locking mechanism.


• Design: A locksmith is able to design specialized lock systems to meet specific requirements when necessary.


• Door repair: Repairing and modifying doors and their frames are a part of a locksmith’s job. This is necessary to make sure that the door fits properly.


• Tools: Tool maintenance is a crucial job of a locksmith. In order to do his job properly he must make sure that the tools are in good, working order. In addition to maintaining his tools, the locksmith is responsible for purchasing the right tools for specific jobs.


• Inspection: Inspecting various types of facilities, such as businesses, is an important part of the job. He must be sure that the building or home is secure and safe.
