Lawn Problems and Watering at Night

Your lawn requires regular watering in order to stay healthy and green. However, if you overwater your lawn or water it at the wrong time of day or during a time when the temperature is too cold or hot, you could unknowingly damage your lawn. Knowing the best times to water your lawn will help it to grow in healthy.

  • Your lawn needs to have approximately one-inch of water per week in order to maintain its health and appearance. You can achieve this level of water by watering your grass once or twice a week.

  • It is best to water your grass either early in the morning when there is still dew on the grass or at night after the sun goes down. You want to be sure that the outside temperature is at least 65 degrees if you are going to water your lawn at night.

  • To achieve the best results, you should night water your lawn between the hours of 9 p.m. and 12 a.m. as long as the temperature permits. Watering your lawn at night when the temperature is below 65 degrees can lead to your lawn developing various lawn diseases.

  • Never water your grass during the middle of the day when the sun is highest in the sky. Doing so can cause your lawn to become scorched. The water will also not be able to properly penetrate the surface of the soil and soak down to the roots of the grass due to the water evaporating because to the heat.

  • In the summer when the heat is extreme and rain is often decreased you want to be sure that you are watering frequently enough to combat the heat so that your lawn does not become dried out and scorched. Remember to water your lawn at night or early morning hours especially during the hot summer months.
