How to Use Silicone Cake Pans
Silicone cookware has been used by professional chefs and bakers for decades. Silicone cake pans are flexible, nonporous and have a naturally nonstick surface. It holds up to temperatures as high as 500 degrees and as low as negative 75. Its versatility and ease of use has made silicone cake pans an easy choice for the home baker.
- Preheat your oven according to your recipe directions. Place your silicone cake pan on a metal cookie sheet before filling it with cake batter. The silicone is extremely flexible and it can be difficult to move from countertop to oven. You do not need to grease your silicone cake pan even if it is recommended in the recipe.
- Place your cake carefully in the oven. Silicone is so flexible that it can easily spill. Keep a careful eye on your cake because silicone pans tend to speed up cooking times by five or ten minutes.
- Remove the cookie sheet and cake pan. Allow the cake pan to thoroughly cool. However, you may want to remove the cake pan from the metal cookie sheet because the metal still radiates heat. The cake will cool more quickly than with traditional pans. Although the outside of the cake may be cool to the touch, the inside is still very hot.
- Remove the cake from the pan. Begin by pulling down the sides of the cake pan and pushing up on the bottom. You can also flip the cake pan over onto a plate, peel the sides away and push the bottom gently down to release the cake.
- Follow the manufacturer's care instructions. Many silicone pans are dishwasher safe but some are hand wash only.
