How to Use Interior Door Locks
Interior door locks are simple locks that are not meant to be used for home security, but rather to keep out unwelcome guests from a bedroom or bathroom while you are using it. These locks are not meant to withstand a lot of pressure, and will break if pushed on hard enough. You should only use this type of lock on the interior of your home where privacy is needed.
- Purchase the type of interior door lock that you wish to use in your home. There are different types to choose from such as locks that open with a key, small twist locks that are located in the center of the door knob, or interior locks that have a small button that needs to be depressed in order to lock the door. Choose the style that suites your needs and preferences.
- Install this interior lock onto the doors in your home where you want privacy such as a bedroom, bathroom or office. You will simply need to remove the old door handle using a standard screwdriver, and then follow the manufacturer’s directions for installing the new interior door locks that you have purchased.
- Be aware that some styles of locks do not have a way to get into them once you have closed the door and it is locked on the other side. If this is a concern for you, you should choose a key lock, or the style that has a small hole on the middle of the door handle on the outside of the door. You can insert a thin metal object into this hole to disengage the locking mechanism.
- Keep a spare key handy if you have interior doors that require a key to enter. You never know when you may become locked out of a room, and need the key to enter. It is best to keep an extra key in the house just in case.
