How to Train in Reupholstery

If you want to learn how to reupholster, you can do so either by taking training classes, learning on the job or joining an apprenticeship. It will take you some time to learn how to upholster furniture and cars, but once you learn you can either work for someone else or start your own business.

  1. Call a college in your area and ask them if they train in upholstery. If they do, visit with the school and look over the classes they offer. Ask them how long their training is and at what level you will be at when you are finished. Talk with financial aid, if needed, and take some classes to learn how to upholstery.

  2. Take more classes, if offered, if you don’t learn everything you need to know about upholstery in the classes you take. Sometimes, these classes only teach you the basics and you will need to learn more. Ask them if they have other classes you can take.

  3. Complete the courses you sign up for. Make sure you learn how to use the different tools needed for this job, as well as how to upholstery furniture and vehicles, as you will be working on both. You should learn how to repair upholstery and have a lot of hands on experience.

  4. Find a job working for a upholstery firm. Make sure you tell them you have had training, but still need some more training. Offer to be an apprenticeship for them while they teach you the skills you need to do this job.
