How to Start an ATV Without the Key
All-terrain vehicles, also called four wheelers, are powered by a battery, which requires a key to start. If you have lost the key or received an ATV that did not have a key, there are three ways in which you can start the ATV without a key. Depending on your situation, one way may be better than the others.
Hotwire the ATV
Hotwiring a vehicle is simply finding another route to start the vehicle, without a key. You will need to identify the wires from the battery, starter and ignition coil. Connect these wires together to start the ATV. You can also smash the key case area and create a spark between the ignition wires housed inside.
Replace the Key
If at all possible, have a new key made instead of trying to ignite the wires on your ATV. You can call the shop where you purchased your ATV or any ATV shop in the area, give them the ATV’s VIN and a new key can be made. There may be a charge for this key. You will need to show proof of ownership with a title or purchase slip.
Purchase a New Switch
Purchasing a new switch can be expensive, but it may be the only option left if you cannot hotwire or replace the key to your ATV. Owners who are unable to obtain the VIN usually have to have a new switch installed. You should contact a reputable dealer or ATV maintenance professional to have a new switch installed on your ATV.
