How to Find a Good Senior Center

How to Start a Senior Center

An adult daycare center can be operated from your home or you may choose a business space. As baby boomers get older, this service becomes more and more in demand. Many working families would prefer not to place their elderly parents in long term care facilities. This need for care introduces a unique earning opportunity.

  1. Fill out appropriate paperwork. Many states require a background check for business owners of senior centers. Keep in mind you will need to also get background checks on employees you hire. This can be done once you begin hiring. Other paperwork includes your business license, liability insurance forms and any other state requirements.

  2. Start the hiring process. Hire staff members that have positive attitudes, patience and a desire to work with the elderly. You should look for experienced staff or those who have received training.

  3. Decide the maximum number adults your business can care for on a day today basis. Too many clients and not enough staff or space may affect the quality of care. Begin inspecting the premises for hazards. Install and test smoke detectors. Post emergency contact numbers in easy to locate places. Purchase fire extinguishers and ensure caretakers know how to use them.

  4. Determine the date and location you will open your business. This is also a good time to form your price and services offered list. Keep your pricing close to that of your competitors, but try not to open your business too close to a competitor's. The exception for this is if you intend to operate from your home. You also need to prepare your service contracts and decide on meal plans at this stage. If there is a meals-on-wheels program in your area, they may be able to assist you. Otherwise, you will need to prepare meals or have staff members prepare them. Make sure you document any allergies, special diets, etc. and follow them closely.
