How to Start a Career in Advertising

A person who enjoys marketing or working with clients may want to look into a career in advertising. There are some steps to take to improve the odds of receiving an offer of employment from an advertising agency. Getting a good education is one of the best ways to prepare for an advertising career.

  1. Earn a bachelor’s degree in marketing or business to help you prepare for a career in advertising. You may have trouble finding a job in advertising if you do not have a four-year degree. If you are still in college or getting ready to attend, meet with an ad agency in your area to find out the minimum educational requirements for an entry-level position.

  2. Land an internship with an ad agency while you are still in college. Ask your academic advisor to help you find an internship with a solid ad agency. You will increase your chances of landing an internship if you are willing to travel out of your area.

  3. Apply for an advertising job once you graduate from college. Find an online job website to look for different advertising positions. If you are willing to relocate, you will increase the number of jobs that you can apply for.

  4. Contact a headhunter to find work in advertising. You may need to lower your goals and start out at a small advertising firm if you cannot land a job at one of your preferred choices. Look for advertising jobs on your own while the headhunter tries to arrange some interviews for you.

  5. Meet with different advertising agencies to decide which one to work for. If you receive multiple job offers, compare the different pay structures and benefit packages to determine which agency has the best overall offer. Review the job requirements and work environment as well to help you make the best decision.
