How to Stain Door and Window Trim

Materials Needed

  • Pry bar

  • Sawhorse

  • 100 grit sandpaper

  • Cloth

  • Latex gloves

  • Stain

  • Paint stirrer

  • Paintbrush

  1. Remove the trim from the door or window. Place a pry bar between the wall and the trim. Next, insert a flat piece of wood between the wall and the handle on the pry bar. The piece of wood will keep the handle from damaging the wall.

  2. Take another pry bar and place it between the wall and trim on the opposite side of the first pry bar, which should be closest to the window or door.

  3. Apply pressure to both pry bars so the trim will come up. Try not to use too much force. You may have to work your way up and down the trim with the pry bars to remove the trim.

  4. Place the trim on top of two sawhorses. Sand the trim thoroughly with 100 grit sandpaper. You want to prepare a smooth surface for the stain to adhere to. Make sure you go with the grain when sanding.

  5. Wet a cloth and squeeze it out until it is damp. Use the cloth to wipe the trim to remove any sand particles. Allow the trim to dry before proceeding to the next step.

  6. Wear latex gloves when applying the stain to protect your hands. Open the stain and mix it with a paint stirrer. Use a paintbrush to apply the stain over the trim. Go with the grain as you apply the stain. Use another paintbrush to go over the stain to remove any excess stain and to create a smooth even finish. Allow the stain to completely dry before reattaching the trim.
