How to Size a Bustier

When buying a bustier, the most important factor to consider is the fit. The right fit requires knowing the correct bra cup size. Taking measurements before buying undergarments is an important practice that will make a difference between making a smart purchase, and wasting money on a garment that is uncomfortable and unflattering.

  • Take measurements directly under the bust line. This should be done over the skin with no clothing on. A regular bra with no padding can be kept on during the measurement.

  • Keep the tape measure parallel or straight across the floor. It should be tight and flat against the skin. If you are doing this yourself, it helps to stand in front of a mirror.

  • Put your arms down and relax your shoulders before reading the measurement.

  • Round up the results depending on the fractions, so that you get whole figures with no decimals. If it is less than half an inch, round it down.

  • Measure the fullest part of the bust, making sure the tape measure is parallel to the floor. The tape should be fitting but not tight. Relax your shoulders and put down your arms before reading the number.

  • Round the results up or down to get, complete numbers. Consult a chart to find the correct bra size. The charts are available from different online sites or in lingerie shops.

  • Take measurements of the waist and compare them to a measurement chart. The bustier fits around the torso and it is important to consider the waist measurement for a correct fit.

  • Measure the waistline over the skin and not over clothing. The tape should be taught around the smallest part of the waistline.

  • Consult a chart with your measurements to determine the appropriate size for the bustier.
