How to Ship Food Items

When sending packages by mail it is important to prepare and ship them correctly. This is especially true when you are shipping food items. Because food is fragile and potentially perishable you should take every measure to follow shipping guidelines and send it correctly.

  1. Use a box that is sturdy and large enough to hold the food items that you are shipping as well as dry ice or frozen gel packs.

  2. Keep non-perishable foods in their original packaging. If it is food that you've baked at home, such as cookies or muffins, place them in a plastic food container.

  3. Put perishable foods in a Styrofoam container that will fit inside of the original box. Place frozen gel packs inside of the Styrofoam container or use wrapped dry ice . Take care not to place the dry ice directly on the food.

  4. Pad the box with bubble wrap or packing peanuts.

  5. Place the lid on top of the Styrofoam container and seal the package.

  6. Use a marker to clearly label the box as "Perishable", "Fragile" or "Keep Refrigerated."

  7. Avoid sending food packages on Fridays or at any time over the weekend. This way your package will be less likely to sit at the post office.
