How to Sew on a Button
You can save a lot of money on alterations and get more wear out of your clothing if you learn to do a few simple things. One of the easiest things you can learn to do is to sew on a button.
- Choose a thread color to match the garment that you are sewing the button onto. If there are additional buttons, you may want to see what color they are attached with so that your thread will match.
- Choose the button that you are going to attach. It is always best to try to have the original button, but in case that it was lost you may want to check the inside of the garment to see if the manufacturer attached any extra. If not, you will have to purchase a button that closely resembles the one you are missing.
- Choose a needle. Make sure that the eye of the needle is not too big to fit through the hole of your button.
- Cut a piece of thread that is approximately 12 inches long and thread it through the eye of your needle. Bring both ends of the tread together with the needle threaded through the middle and tie a knot combining the two ends.
- Push your needle up through the fabric and through one of the holes of your button, working from underneath the material. Pull your thread taunt until the knot is flush with the underside of your material.
- Put your needle in the opposite hole of your button and proceed in the reverse order, pushing your needle and thread back through to the reverse side of your material.
- Securely attach the button by following this procedure five or six times, making sure that each hole of the button is secured with several strands of thread.
- Finish by pulling the needle through to the underside of the material, make a knot as close to the material as you can and clip your additional thread.
