How to Tell If a Water Pump Is Going Bad

How to Set Water Pump Pressure Switch

Your home’s water pump maintains water pressure. When the water pressure drops, the pressure switch initiates the water pump. The pressure inlet on the switch can get buildup from residue and debris over time. This in turn will give false system readings which may effect the amount on your water bill. The pressure switch will also suffer damage and may not continue to work properly.

Items Needed:

  • Adjustable wrench

  • Flathead screwdriver

Keep the water pump's manufacturer's guide handy just in case any questions or problems arise while adjusting the pressure setting. The guide has valuable information regarding the proper pressure settings.

1. Flush the system thoroughly with water before setting the pressure switch. This will eliminate any residue that has built up so that the system readings will be accurate and keep the switch working optimally.

2. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the holding nut below the pressure switch. After you have done this, insert the flathead screwdriver into the adjustment slot on the pressure switch. This is located above the holding nut.

3. Rotate the screwdriver either clockwise or counter clockwise to adjust the switch to 40 foot-pounds of pressure while simultaneously the pressure gauge, which is above the pressure switch. In most cases clockwise will decrease pressure and counter clockwise will increase pressure.  Although 40 foot-pounds of pressure is the average amount of pressure for most pumps, always check the water pump's manufacturer’s guidelines for their optimal pressure setting.

4. Stop turning the screwdriver once the gauge is set to the proper pressure. Refasten the holding nut with the wrench. The switch has now been replaced.
