How to Set Up a Cyber Cafe

There are many reasons why people patronize cyber cafes. Some people need a place to use the Internet, and some just want to be in a different environment while using the Internet. Others may not have Internet connection at home. Cyber cafes provide computer and Internet services to individuals for a fee. Starting a cyber cafe can be a lucrative business venture.


  1. Create a solid business plan. Develop a business plan that describes what services you will be providing, cost of starting the business, needed equipment and supplies, and how you are going to raise the needed capital. Include your goals for the business, income projections, target market and your planned marketing strategies. A good business plan can help guide you as you start and operate your business.

  2. Obtain required licenses. Check local and state law for the appropriate licenses and permits required for running a cyber cafe. Contact your local county clerk's office for information on this. Also contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to obtain a tax identification number.

  3. Secure finance for your cyber cafe. Setting up a cyber cafe does require a bit of initial start-up capital and you will want to find sources of raising the needed funds. Contact a bank or other lender to apply for a business loan. Lenders generally want to see a business plan when you apply for a loan. Check with the Small Business Administration about obtaining government grants and other financial assistance to small businesses.

  4. Find a location to set up your cyber cafe. Choose a high traffic location, especially an area that is close to tourist attractions. Conduct some market research to be sure there is a demand for a cyber cafe in this area.

  5. Purchase the equipment and supplies you need for your cyber cafe. You will need networking equipment, computers, virus protection software, cables, tables, chairs and other office supplies and furniture. Purchase a router that allows for Internet connection on multiple computers. You will also need security cameras and a powerful alarm to protect your cyber cafe.

  6. Set up your space. Plan your layout carefully and set up your cyber cafe. Provide adequate electrical service as some customers will like to to plug in their computers. You can hire a technical whiz to help you set up everything. Furnish your cyber cafe nicely to attract lots of customers.
