How to Set Up Direct Deposit for Social Security Benefits

Direct deposit is the easiest way to receive your social security benefits. In fact, electronic transfer is currently the only way to receive payments. If you don’t have a checking account, SSA can set you up with a card or account for your automatic payments to transfer to.

What You’ll Need

  • Documentation for your Social Security benefit application These documents need to be verified originals, and will include your (and your children’s and spouse’s, if applicable) birth certificate, military discharge papers, and most recent tax return forms. You’ll also need your Social Security number (or card), and proof of citizenship of lawful immigration papers (if you were born somewhere other than the U.S.).

  • Checking account information Gather your account info and routing number (found on your checks) from a checkbook or account statement.

Note: If you decide to apply for benefits in person (at a local social security office), bring these documents with you. You can call in advance to find out which documentation will be required for your specific situation. If you apply online, still keep them available. At the end of the online application process, you'll be given instruction on how and where to submit the forms to Social Security.

Steps

  1. Use the benefit assessment calculator available on the SSA website.

  2. Apply for social security benefits as soon as you are eligible, either on the government Social Security application website (make sure you are using Social Security’s “.gov” website), or at an office serving your area. If you are over 65, your benefits will include Medicare (you may need to prepare additional information documents for the Medicare application).

  3. If you need to stop an application and come back later (while applying online), save your unique applicant number somewhere for reference. You will need this number to return to the application.

  4. If applying online, electronically sign your finished form and follow any instructions related to the official documents you used to fill it out. These steps will help the Social Security Administration verify your identity. You will usually need to bring official documents to a physical SSA office after your online application.

  5. If your checking account or financial institution changes (requiring you to receive your checks elsewhere) update the direct deposit information immediately. If you need help, call the SSA help line number.
