How to Reuse Vinyl Flooring Tiles With Glue
You can save money while adding some style to your remodeling project by reusing vinyl floor tiles. The old tiles are installed in the same way as new tiles. Make sure that the old vinyl flooring tiles are not cracked, mildewed or stained.
Things You Will Need
- Trisodium Phosphate (TSP)
- Plastic Cleaning Gloves
- Hot water
- Scrub Brush
- Tape Measure
- Chalk Snap Line
- Square
- Tile Adhesive
- Notched Trowel
- Salvaged Vinyl Floor Tiles
- Vinyl Tile Cutter
- Mix ½ cup TSP in a gallon bucket of hot water.
- Lay the old tiles face down on a drainable floor.
- Scrub the bottoms of the tiles vigorously with a scrub brush, while wearing cleaning gloves, using the TSP solution. Rinse the tiles well and allow them to dry for 24 hours.
- Divide the floor into four areas, using a chalk snap line to lay two intersecting lines from the center of each edge of the floor to the center of the edge across from it. Place a square at the intersection as you snap the lines, and adjust the lines to make sure they are exactly 90 degrees off each other.
- Spread tile adhesive onto the middle of the floor with a notched trowel, covering about four square feet within one of the four corners of the intersection.
- Place the first cleaned vinyl tile firmly down into the adhesive, bordered by the two lines. Place the next tile against it, pushing the sides of the tiles tightly into one another.
- Place the tiles from the middle of the floor out toward the perimeter, pushing the tiles into each other while keeping the whole grid straight against the lines. Apply additional adhesive as needed.
- Cut the perimeter tiles using your tile cutter. Lay the cut tiles with the cut side facing the walls. Leave floor trim space of about 3/8 inch between the tiles and the walls.
