How to Reset Surge Protectors for Electronics

Electrical power surges can cause extensive damage or destroy electrical devices such as televisions, computers, game consoles and appliances. Surges, caused by a moment of over voltage, occur during lightening storms and other conditions beyond the utility company’s control. Plugging sensitive electronics into a high-quality surge protector prevents expensive damage. Surge protectors shunt sudden electrical voltage surges into a grounding source. Following a power surge the protector may require resetting to continue protecting electronics.

  1. Locate the surge protector and look for the red indicator light. A non-illuminated indicator light means the unit requires resetting. If the light is on, the surge protector is working properly. Consult the owner’s manual issued with the surge protector for reset instructions specific to the unit.

  2. Reset the surge protector, with the reset button or switch. Find the reset button near the power cord on the surge protection unit. Push the reset button in or toggle the reset switch until the red indicator light illuminates. It should take a few seconds to reset the unit. A red light indicates a properly functioning surge protector.

  3. Failure to reset can indicate a problem with the unit or electronics plugged into it. Test the electronics plugged into the unit by unplugging and plugging them in one-by-one. Turn each item on individually until you find the one causing the problem.

  4. Replace the surge protector if the red indicator light does not come on after several attempts to reset and all the electronics are working properly in a different plug. Multiple electrical surges damage the protection component inside the surge protector, requiring replacement.

  5. Purchase a new surge protector with maximum protection for your electronics. Plug the new unit into a grounded, three-pronged electrical outlet and turn it on. Plug the electronics you want protected into the surge protector. Look for the red indicator light, indicating the unit is ready to protect against over-voltages.
