How to Remove Sliding Closet Doors

Removing the sliding doors from a closet will help to open up the area more and to give you more space. Different sliding doors have different requirements on how to remove them, so that they are removed will out causing any damage.


  1. Slide one of the bypass doors open to give you access to the closet. Check the door track to find out what type of track is installed. Sliding doors usually will have either a notch track or a solid track.

  2. Slide open both sliding doors giving you access to the screws in the bottom of the sliding door tracks. Remove the screws from the bottom track and then remove the bottom track away from the doors.

  3. Remove the doors from the rolling track, to do this lower the top rollers on the sliding closet door with a Philips screwdriver, this will allow enough room to remove the doors. Align the front sliding door with the notches and lift the door slightly to remove from the track. Repeat this process to remove the second slider. If you have a solid track, continue to the next step.

  4. Remove the doors from the solid track, to do this lower the top rollers on the door and slide the front door in to the middle of the door opening. Grasp the door on both sides;lift the door when the door is tilted between ten and twenty degrees. Repeat the process to remove the second door.
