How to Record Music on the Computer
Music can easily be recorded on your computer, thanks to the latest developments of new technology. This is possible whether you have previous experience or if you are a complete novice. The effects that are now available from one type of software used to cost thousands of dollars in equipment and software programs.
- Check your computer to confirm its processing ability and ensure that it has at least one gigabyte of RAM. Once this is confirmed, choose the type of program you wish to use as your digital audio workstation, or DAW. If you have a PC, some of the more popular choices include Reason, Digital Performer, Cubase and Pro Tools. For Mac users, some of the more popular options include Garageband and Logic.
- Obtain a recording interface, more commonly referred to as a sound card, which includes various inputs for headphones, a microphone and a guitar. It is recommended to purchase one that has a FireWire interface, which omits the need of an AC adaptor.
- Purchase a keyboard with a Midi controller connection. This allows you to modify the sounds in the music that you record and hooks up to your computer through a USB port. If the keyboard you purchase is not USB compatible, purchase a separate interface for Midi and USB connection.
- Install the driver for a microphone, if you wish to record your own sounds into your music. In addition to microphones, make sure you have a set of high-quality headphones.
- Configure the software and install the necessary drivers for you to use the keyboard and microphone to create music on your computer.
- Set the appropriate input levels to make sure your instruments have the sound you want. Make sure to review the instruction manual thoroughly for the program you installed and begin practicing, so you can create your masterpieces.
