How to Put an O2 Sensor on a 1996 Mazda Truck
Signs that the O2 sensor in your 1996 Mazda truck needs replacement could be engine misfires or engine hesitation. To properly diagnose if the sensor needs replacement ,drive down to your local auto parts store. Most stores provide a scan for free and will tell you using a hand scanner whether or not the oxygen sensor needs replacement.
Items Needed
- Jack/Jack stands
- Wrench
- Torque wrench
- O2 sensor
- Anti-seize spray
- Park the car on level ground and pull up on the parking break to secure the car.
- Using the jack, lift up the car and put the jack stands underneath the Mazda truck. Using penetrating oil, lube the threads of the sensor.
- Remove the wires from the O2 sensor. Take out the sensor using a wrench.
- Put anti-seize on the new sensor. Do not get any of the anti-seize on the tip because it will damage the sensor. Put the new sensor in place.
- Using a torque wrench tighten the sensor. Plug the wires back into the O2 sensor on the 1996 Mazda truck. Do not let the wires touch the exhaust.
- Lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the jack and jack stands.
- Turn the car on and drive back to the auto parts store to have them scan the car again to see if the new O2 sensor is working.
Tip
- Instead of using a generic wrench to remove the O2 sensor, you can buy a special O2 sensor wrench. Using the special tool will help ensure proper removal and replacement of the new sensor.
