How to Properly Start an RC Helicopter

Flying a radio controlled (RC) helicopter is fun and entertaining for hobbyists of nearly all ages. This is because the activity itself is enjoyable even when performed in the most simple level. However, keep in mind that there are specific steps or procedures you must go through in order to fly and control the machine properly. This starts with a proper starting routine.

Items Needed:

  • Radio controlled helicopter

  • Electric starter motor

  • Glow Plug starter

  • Glow fuel

  1. Read your particular RC helicopter's instruction manual to find out the correct amount of glow fuel is recommended for your model type. Fill the helicopter's fuel tank with this amount of glow fuel.

  2. Inspect the throttle linkage and make sure it does not contain any dirt or debris.

  3. Set the helicopter engine to idle.

  4. Turn both the radio transmitter and the radio receiver on. Double check to ensure that the controls on the radio transmitter are properly set. In particular, the throttle controls should be set properly and the idle setting should be properly in place.

  5. Stick the glow starter onto the glow plug that is installed on the helicopter engine.

  6. Connect the glow plug starter to the helicopter's starting shaft.

  7. Make sure the starter is positioned and attached so that it is straight. This will help make sure that there is no damage incurred to the motor or helicopter itself during the start of the flight.

  8. Grip the helicopter blades firmly in one hand while you turn on the glow plug starter. This will cause the engine to turn over and start.

  9. Disconnect the glow plug starter from the engine and release your grip on the helicopter blades.

  10. Make sure you and others are at a safe distance away from the helicopter before you allow it to take flight.
