How to Plan an Apartment Search

Plan an apartment search by making a list of all of the factors important to you in choosing a new living situation. Location, price, amenities and neighborhood safety are just a few things to consider when searching for an apartment.

1. Identify your housing needs. Walking home late at night from work might require that you live close to work in a safe location. If you have a cat, you'll need an apartment that allows pets.

2. Determine your housing budget. This might be a price range rather than a set price.

3. Consider utilities. Some apartment landlords pay for utilities such as gas, garbage collection and water. Others expect you to cover these charges. Keep this in mind when searching for an apartment.

4. Decide which amenities your apartment must have. You might prefer an apartment complex with a workout room so you can exercise early in the morning before going to work. A swimming pool may be desirable for a fun summer activity. You might need a gas stove because you cook a lot. Make a list of must-have amenities.

5. Determine the apartment lease terms. You can commit to a one year lease to lock in a lower rental price. Alternatively, a month-to-month apartment may be preferable if circumstances seem uncertain.

6. Search a reputable website or newspaper for apartments. Each locality has its own popular spot for advertising rentals. This may be online, in a print publication, on a university housing office or a community housing board.

7.  Contact potential landlords to ask important questions. If satisfied with the answers, schedule a time to visit the apartments. Ask about the need for a security deposit and other move-in costs not advertised in the ad.
