How to Open a Pet Sitting Business

Pet sitters provide an invaluable service to pet owners who do not want leave their animals home alone. Some pet owners may leave their pets home for short periods of time, such as when they are working. Pet sitters can provide daily or ad hoc services. 


 

1.  Learn as much as you can about the industry. Visit other pet related businesses such as kennels, pet stores and pet shelters.  Ask questions about different breeds of animals and volunteer your assistance to get hands on one experience.


2.  Determine what type of animals you will provide services for and if you will include additional services such as grooming. You may opt to only care for one type of animal.


3.  Decide on a name for your business.  Try to think of a memorable name that reflects your love for animals.  You want potential clients to think of you when they need a sitter.


4.  Obtain the proper licenses and insurance.  Liability insurance is essential for a pet sitting business.  Most pet owners will inquire whether or not you have insurance, and a lot will not use your services if you don't have it.  In addition, protect yourself and the pets you care for by taking a class to learn how to administer first aid to pets.


 


5.  Prepare contracts.  Your contract should include all aspects of your service including pricing.


 


6.  Advertise your business and join professional organizations.  Easy ways to advertise include business cards, magnets for vehicles, a website, door hangers or flyers at your local pet shop.


 


7. Locate clients.  You can start by offering reduced services to friends and family in exchange for references and word-of-mouth recommendations.
