Assisted living facilities are created to house seniors who require assistance due to immobility or diminished capacity and individuals who are disabled and require assistance in completing day-to-day tasks. These facilities are regulated by state and federal laws and you must obtain the proper licenses to successfully run a facility.
- Create a business plan for your assisted living facility. Within this business plan, you should include all policies and procedures that pertain to your assisted living facility. When creating these policies and procedures ensure that they cover all laws and regulations that apply to these facilities. Create a list of services in which your assisted living facility provides for your residence.
- Review the inspection requirements for the assisted living facility's structure. State and federal laws apply to the condition of assisted living facilities. Review these requirements and perform a thorough walk through of the entire facility to ensure compliance with these inspection requirements. Inspections are required before your license is approved.
- Schedule an inspection of the assisted living facility with the health department of the county in which your assisted living facility is located. Obtain a report of this inspection. If there are any negative findings, you are required to address these issues and schedule an additional inspection to ensure compliance.
- Bring your business plan and your compliant inspection report to your county health department. Complete an application for an assisted living license. Once this application is filed and all required fees are paid the county health department reviews and evaluates your application and documentation. You are notified by mail of the decision in your case.
