How to Obtain Government Business Grants

If you are looking to obtain a government grant for your small business, rest assured knowing that they are out there, you just have to know where to look. There are grants available for start-ups as well as established businesses, both on a federal and state level.


  1. Visit the US Government Grants website Grants.gov. This website provides user guides and links to state agencies that provide business grants. Use the advanced search tools to search open opportunities. Click each option that applies to your small business.

  2. The US Small Business Administration is another source for business grants. Click on the "Grants" page and locate the type of grant you need for your business.

  3. The Small Business Development Center is another venue for help with grants. Contact your state's center; they will help guide small-business owners in need of grant funding on a state level.

  4. Search your state for available grants. Place your state's name and small business grants in the search box of your browser. Many states offer grants to large and small businesses; the search results will bring up those agencies that will assist you in your endeavor. Contact each agency for more information about the application process and to see when grant funds will be available to you.

  5. Government and state grants are typically funded once per year. Once the grant funds have been exhausted for the current year, it may be necessary to wait until the next years funding to receive your grant.
