How to Mount Original Art on Canvas
Mounting original art work on canvas creates beautiful works of art that have depth and style. The weight of the original work will dictate the type of canvas that you select and the additional supports that you choose to install to support your piece. Here a a few simple tips that will get you started.
- Choose a canvas that is large enough and sturdy enough to support your artwork. When choosing a canvas and creating your work, you may want to consider whether you will be painting or adding color to your background prior to mounting your work. This will help determine the type and color of canvas that you will purchase.
- Add D-ring hangers to the back of your canvas approximately 1/3 of the way down from the top of your canvas. Attach a hanging wire, which should be equal the width of the canvas plus an additional 7 to 9 inches. This will allow the canvas to be ready to be hung once your project is complete.
- Paint or color the background of your canvas using acrylic paint. Consider creating a design that is an extension of your art piece. Allow your canvas to dry for at least 3 to 5 hours before proceeding with your project.
- Create a smooth surface on the back of your original artwork. This will give you a surface to adhere to your canvas. Depending on the type of work, you may have to add additional materials to create this flat surface.
- Apply a thin bead of weather stripping cement or other canvas adhesive to the edges of your original art work as well as to the flat surface that was identified and press it into place on your canvas. Allow to dry at least 1 hour or as recommended by the product manufacturer.
- Consider adding additional supports to stabilize the piece to the canvas depending on the weight of your project.
