How to Mix Concrete for Shower Floors

Should you be looking to create a floor for your shower you will need to mix the cement that will act as your shower’s base. This will need to be done regardless of whether you plan on leaving the floor bare or installing tile.

What You Will Need

  • Sand

  • Water

  • Mixing container

  • Mixing tool

  • Portland cement

  • Dust mask

  • Goggles

  1. Mix 1 part cement and 5 parts dry sand together in your bucket. Be sure that you are wearing your goggles to keep particle out of your eyes. When mixed, the sand/cement mixture should be a uniform gray.

  2. Slowly add water to your sand/cement mixture. Be sure to keep aside a small portion of the mixture in case too much water is added. The mixture should shape into a ball within your hand that doesn’t leave behind moisture when you touch it.

  3. Stir the concrete mixture by hand with a mixing tool or by attaching the proper bit to your power drill.

  4. Mix until there are no more clumps within the cement.

Additional Information

  • Ready-made cement mix can be purchased, however, to achieve the correct ratio of cement to sand additional sand will need to be added.

  • When mixing your cement/sand mixture, do so on a flat surface inside a bucket or wheel-barrow.

  • Ensure that your sand and cement are mixed thoroughly before adding water.

  • Make sure that you use sharp sand for your concrete mixture.

  • Avoid using masonry cement because it often contains lime.
