How to Measure Replacements for Picture Windows

Picture windows tend to start cracking and leaking water around the edges of the window do to age. Replacing the old picture windows can add value to your home as well as save you money over time. Replacing old windows makes your home look nicer as well as adding value.


  1. Make sure when purchasing a new picture window you keep it as close to the original picture  window as you can or else you will find that you may have to make structural changes to your to your home so that the new window will fit.

  2. Examine the inside and outside of the window sill to make sure none of the wood is rotted or has become soft.

  3. Measure the window first from side to side, at the top, middle and center of the window.

  4. Measure your window next at the left, right and center with the tape measure from the top to the bottom.

  5. Use these measurements at the building supply store when you purchase your new window.

  6. You will need to decide whether or not you will be replacing the window yourself or hiring somebody to do it for you. If you choose to have a company install the new picture window for you, you can check with the supply store and see if they do installing as well if not check around for local companies.

  7. Contact two or three local companies and get estimates for the work and to see what the work will entail.

  8. Choose a company to replace your new picture window.
