How to Prepare Poultry Feed

How to Make Your Own Poultry Feed

Having healthy poultry is important whether the bird is young or old.  It does not matter if the poultry is used for laying eggs, or to be used for meat.  Making your own feed for the poultry guarantees they are getting the right nutrients they need and the amount they need to be healthy.

Things you’ll need

  • Large containers that are air-tight

  • Five gallon buckets

  • Aragonite

  • Salt

  • Probiotic

  • Crab meal

  • Flax seed

  • Nurti-Balancer

  • Kelp

  • Fish meal

  • Cultured yeast

  • Alfalfa pellets

  • Peas

  • Oats

  • Corn

  • Wheat

  • Barley

Instructions

  1. Find a place to make the poultry feed.  If you have many birds, you will need plenty of room to fix the ingredients.  A clean place with a sink and a counter will be the best.  All ingredients need to be stored in containers that bugs and rodents cannot get into.

  2. Purchase the ingredients your flock of poultry needs.  If it is possible, buy organic since it does not have pesticides.  This will help keep your animals healthy and strong.  Make sure you purchase the ingredients your flock needs for the job it has and its stage of life.  If your birds are young than more protein is needed and if they are going to be used for meat, than you want more starch in their diet.

  3. Add the ingredients to a large container such as a five-gallon bucket for mixing.  Measure out the correct amount of each ingredient into the bucket and then mix it with your hands.  Only mix the amount you will be using over the next few days.  Feed that is allowed to age loses some of the nutrients it holds.  Seal the container to keep the feed fresh.  Be sure to mix the feed each time you use it since some of the ingredients may have moved to the bottom of the bucket.
