How to Make Seven Layer Salads

A seven layer salad is a great dish to take to a picnic or potluck. It is easy to make and always a crowd pleaser. Making a seven layer salad requires layering all of the ingredients rather than mixing them, for a salad that tastes as good as it looks.

Prepare

  1. Gather a tall glass serving bowl to layer the ingredients in.

  2. Gather a head of lettuce, 1 red onion, 2 tomatoes, a 10-ounce package of frozen peas that have been thawed, 2 cups of mayonnaise, 2 teaspoons of sugar, cheddar cheese and 8 slices of bacon.

  3. Cook the bacon and crumble it after it has drained.

  4. Chop the lettuce, tomato and onions.

  5. Place a layer of lettuce on the bottom of the serving bowl.

  6. Cover the lettuce with a layer of onions.

  7. Add a layer of tomatoes followed by a layer of peas.

  8. Stir together the mayonnaise and the sugar.

  9. Cover the salad with a layer of mayonnaise.

  10. Spread a layer of cheese over the top of the mayonnaise.

  11. Cover with a layer of crumbled bacon.

Tips

  1. Try adding a layer of chopped ham or eggs on top instead of bacon.

  2. Switch one of the ingredients for another favorite ingredient, such as peppers.

  3. Use your favorite salad dressing in place of the mayonnaise.

  4. Make a southwest version of the salad by layering lettuce, black beans, tomatoes, chopped onions, black olives, sour cream mixed with salsa and cheese.

  5. Cover the top of the southwest layered salad with tortilla strips or crushed tortilla strips.
