How to Make Pet Food Donations to Shelters

Not everyone can adopt a pet due to various reasons, but helping out shelter animals allows families to give back to the community and support their local shelters. Shelters help thousands of animals every year and through your pet food donations you can help the shelters to help the animals.

  1. Contact local shelters and find out what is on their “Wish List” for donated pet items. Pet shelters will normally accept any type of food; however, sometimes there is a high demand for one or two certain items. The same process applies for supplies.

  2. Check your pet food supply to see if you have any of the pet food in stock. If it is open, do not send it to the pet shelter, because opened bags of food could spill in the donation bins.

  3. Purchase the brand of pet food that you want to donate to the shelter and any other items you think the shelter might need. Shelters always appreciate paper towels, cleaning supplies and toys for the pets.

  4. Collect all the items that you are going to bring to the shelter and place it in a large container.

  5. Create an itemized list of the food and pet supplies that you are donating. Use this list to deduct your donations from your taxes next year.

  6. Drop off the donations at the local shelter of your choice. Check to make sure that they are open the day you plan to drop the donations off, so that the donations do not sit outside and get ruined.
