How to Make Fabric Storage Bins
Homemade fabric storage bins are easy to make with just a few basic supplies. Cardboard boxes are great for keeping in a storage room, but unsightly to look at when stored openly. A pretty fabric storage bin is attractive and functional. You can be proud to show off your handiwork.
Materials Needed
- A cardboard filebox with a lid (purchased at an office supply store and assembled)
- Sturdy cotton fabric
- A newspaper
- Scissors
- Glue Gun
- Straight pins
Instructions for Box
- Make a pattern by tracing around each side and the bottom of the cardboard box onto sheets of newspaper. Add 1 inch to all sides, except for the top of each side section, where you will add 2 inches. Cut out the pattern with scissors.
- Pin the newspaper pattern to the sturdy cotton fabric. Use scissors to cut out the pattern from the material. Remove the straight pins and take off the paper pattern.
- Sew around all sides of the fabric pieces, using the zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. This will keep the fabric from unraveling.
- Sew together the squares and rectangles to form a fabric box into the identical shape of the cardboard box. Use a straight stitch and a 3/4 inch seam allowance.
- Turn your new fabric container right side out.
- Slide the cardboard file box, without the lid, into the fabric box.
- Fold the 2 inches of extra fabric over the top of the open cardboard box.
- Using a hot glue gun, glue the top of the fabric box to the inside of the cardboard box and allow one hour of drying time.
Instructions for Lid
- Cut out a rectangle of fabric that will cover the outside of the lid. Allow for enough material to cover the sides.
- Sew around the entire perimeter of the fabric rectangle with a zigzag stitch to prevent unraveling at the material's edge.
- Fold the material at the corners to fit smoothly over the lid.
- Use a glue gun to attach the material onto the inside of the box and allow one hour to dry.
These colorful and creative fabric storage boxes look nice when stacked or placed on shelves. They are sturdy, efficient and will blend in well. Be sure to choose a fabric that will coordinate well with the color scheme of the room.
*Use caution and common sense when working with a hot glue gun. Children should be supervised at all times to prevent serious burns.
