How to Replace Blades in a Safety Razor

How to Load a Safety Razor

Safety razors come in all different shapes and sizes. They also have different amounts of blades. The first safety razor had only one blade, but today's most popular ones have five. No mater how many blades your razor has, the process of loading your razor is essentially the same.

  1. Before attempting to load a safety razor, identify what type of razor you have and what company makes the razor. Razor cartridges cannot be interchanged between companies and models. A Schick Hydro cartridge cannot load onto a Gillette Mach Three and vice versa.

  2. After purchasing your proper cartridges, you will find that they are all stored together in a plastic case with the back of the blades facing outward. Do not take the cartridges out of the case by hand.

  3. Take the razor in one hand and the plastic case containing the razor cartridges in the other. Most safety razors will have two buttons at the head of the razor. Pinch these two buttons together, which will make a piece on the top of the razor retract.

  4. As you push the buttons together, press your razor into the back of the cartridge. Once the two have been connected, release the buttons. This should allow the razor and cartridge to connect with each other.

  5. Gently pull the razor away from the plastic case. You will find that the razor is now together in one piece. Store the remaining cartridges in a cool, dark area. Although the blades will not rust, many cartridges now contain strips of soap to help ease irritation when shaving. This soap must remain dry.
