How to Live With Major Depression

Major depression is a debilitating illness that can be a constant battle for the patient to deal with every day. Discussing the illness with a trained professional is one way to fight it. Many patients require regular medication in order to cope with the symptoms that result from major depression.

  • Meet with a doctor to get information on how to live with major depression. If the doctor prescribes medication to treat the illness, find out about the side effects. Follow up with the doctor if you find that the medication is not having a positive effect on your condition.

  • Sit down with your family members to talk about your depression. Many times just having a trusted support group will help you to improve your outlook. Try to be honest when you talk about your depression so your family can help you cope with the illness.

  • Join a therapy group to talk with others about your depression. Take a family member with you for support when you attend the first session. After you go to a few group sessions, decide if you want to continue to attend the meetings or to stop going if they are not helping you.

  • Exercise to battle your depression. Join a gym or workout by running on your own. If you start to feel good about yourself by exercising, you may be able to win the battle against depression. Keep track of which workouts help you the most and try to get some exercise at least once every other day. Ask a friend to workout with you to help motivate you to continue exercising.

  • Adjust your diet so you always eat healthy foods. As with exercising, improving your appearance can have a major impact on your depression. Experiment with different foods and monitor your mood swings each day. Consult with a dietician if you need help planning your daily meals.
