How to Landscape a Steep Yard Without Terraces

Steep yards make it difficult to garden; however, there are many landscaping options that will help keep your yard looking fresh and exciting. Terraces are extremely attractive and increase the growing space in your garden, but it is ideal to look into other methods when you have a steep yard.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Gardening tools

  • Grass or perennial bedding plants

  • Groundcovers

  • Landscaping fabric

  • Rocks and mortar

  1. Add beauty to your yard by planting perennials and grasses. Alternate the planting beds and make them wide enough to mow or for working space. Roughly four and five feet wide are good spaces to have.

  2. Give groundcovers a shot. These can take the place of grass and the best part is that groundcovers never need to be mowed. Groundcovers are available for every climate and rainfall zone, so these will add a definite quality to your steep landscape.

  3. Add an element of contrast to your garden. A dry creek bed is easy to manage and suits a conscious budget. Dig a meandering path down your hill and line it with landscape fabric. Cover it with rocks mortared into place and add a few colorful plants for color.

  4. Install a pond. A steep yard makes it perfect for a well-rounded pond. Landscaping fabric can be used for this project also and garden fence can help secure it. Many home supply stores specialize in garden ponds, so speak to a store representative to see what your options are.

  5. Cut down the slope in your yard. Hire an experienced contractor to grade your steep garden because he will be able to properly reduce the slope for easy-to-manage landscaping.
