How to Keep a Beauty Salon Clean and Healthy

Keeping a beauty salon clean and healthy is an ongoing endeavor. Stations and items must be kept clean throughout the day and after closing, in order to maintain a clean and healthy environment for employees and customers. With the proper knowledge and planning, keeping a salon clean is an achievable and easy task.

Salons are breeding grounds for allergies, dirt and infection, if they are not properly cleaned and maintained. Dust in the air, hair and chemical sprays can cause irritation to customers and employees. If hair products and equipment are clean and maintained, along with keeping the salon itself clean throughout the day, then these allergy and infection-causing agents can be kept to a minimum. Cleaning the salon throughout the day and maintaining a solid level of cleanliness can be done with just a few steps between clients.

  • Wipe down all surfaces. Use an all-purpose antibacterial cleaner to wipe down work stations, chairs and sinks. Clean up any spills from chemicals, water spots or areas that may turn into hazards or areas were mold and mildew can breed.

  • Sweep hair cutting areas to ensure the area is free of debris and appears clean for the next client or clients coming in for appointments. Make sure to sweep all debris into a dustpan and remove it from the area immediately. Piles of hair and other debris should not be left out or pushed into corners.

  • Mop floors at the end of the day with an all-purpose cleaner and disinfectant. This will remove any debris that is left over from sweeping and also any chemicals that may have dripped onto the floor during the day. Mop the floor with the disinfectant solution and again with warm, clear water to remove any leftover cleaner.

  • Clean drains and put up hair products in their proper spaces. Between clients and at the end of the business day, perform a quick check to make sure all drains are free of hair and debris. Put any cleaning products away and make sure that any old products that cannot be reused are thrown away.

  • Check all hair care equipment. Remove hair from brushes, combs and sheers. Place hair care equipment in a disinfecting solution to remove any debris or byproducts. Discard any hair care equipment that is malfunctioning, broken or has issues that prevent it from working properly on the next client.
