How to Install Tile Patterns
The installation of tile patterns is not difficult, but requires patience and some planning. You need to make sure the tiles will fit the surface where you lay them, and some cutting may be required to make the tiles fit into the desired surface.
Directions:
- Design a pattern for the way you want the tiles to look finished. You can purchase preprinted patterns at hardwood and home improvement stores, or you can design your own. In your pattern, make your illustrations to scale so you will be able to determine the structure of the tiles.
- Prepare the tiles for the installation process. Some will need to be cut in half or a smaller size to fit the location. This is especially true when reaching a wall or a corner. Measure each piece before you cut them so you place them properly and do not waste any tiles.
- Prepare the working surface prior to actually laying the tiles. Clean it of any dust and dirt. Accumulation of dust and dirt will adversely effect the adhesive qualities of the tiles and make them set unevenly.
- Spread the mortar on the back of the tiles carefully. You want enough to stick, but you do not want to apply too much, because it will make them set unevenly.
- Position the tiles as you use them. This is especially important if you have tiles cut to a certain size. You do not want to mix them up, and need to have some kind of order that makes sense to you as you lay the tiles.
- Let the tiles dry and set for a full day after you have finishing laying. Once they have set, apply the grout to cover any gaps between tiles so the surface will look right and will do the job intended.
