How to Install Metal Railings on Brick Steps
Installing metal railings on the steps of your front porch can add curb appeal and turn your house into a home. Metal railings come in one piece and the railing is molded to the support post so this makes it fairly easy to work with.
The process of attaching the prefabricated piece to your brick steps is a fairly simple process with just a few common tools.
- Position the metal railings in the desired position on the brick steps. While you are preparing for the installation, the railing will stand on its own, but still use caution as it could tip over.
- Use a permanent marker to mark the bolt holes in the base on your brick steps.
- Remove the old railing if there is one. Use a hammer drill with a concrete bit in order to achieve the depth needed. The required depth should be indicated on the package on your railing purchase, or you can research the specific product you purchased online.
- Remove the threaded sleeves from the lag bolts to be installed. This can be accomplished by gently tapping the sleeve into the drilled holes. The top of the sleeve should be flush with the brick step surface.
- Re-position the railing. Use one bolt for each anchor base, and begin installing the bolt, just enough to grab the threads.
- Begin all the bolts this way in each base. In order to ensure a sturdy and even rail surface, tighten the bolts in stages, moving down the line from bolt to bolt.
