How to Speed Up an Internet Cable Connection

How to Install Internet Cable Ends

Ethernet cables connect computers to Internet modems and other devices such as printers. When the cables are no longer working properly or do not fit into the devices correctly, it could be owed to bad cable ends. Instead of buying new cables, you can replace the ends more cheaply.

Items Needed:

  • Wire cutters

  • Knife

  • Scissors

  • Ethernet cord

  • Ethernet ends

  • RJ-45 connector

  • RJ-45 crimper

  1. Use a pair of wire cutters to cut the end off the Ethernet cable. This makes all the wires even and gives you a smooth area to work with.

  2. Use the wire cutters or a knife to strip the plastic covering from the ends of the wires. Strip the plastic only half an inch to 1 inch from the end of the wires.

  3. Use your hands to untangle the wires. Each of the eight wires should be separated and straightened. Look at the opposite end of the Ethernet cord to see the pattern in which the wires are arranged. Arrange the cut wires to form the same order or pattern. If the ends do not match up, the Ethernet cables will not work.

  4. Pull the wires close together, without disturbing the pattern or order. Slide the wires into the RJ-45 connector. Position the wires to line up with the conductor plates inside the RJ-45 connector. There should be no wires showing. If you do see wires, you need to push the cord further into the connector until they are not showing.

  5. Use the RJ-45 crimping tool to crimp the connector and hold it onto the wires. Plug the Ethernet cord into a port, and test it to make sure it is working properly.
