How to Improve a Cat's Dental Health

Cat dental disease is very common, particularly gingivitis and cavities. Most cats over 2 years of age have some form of dental disease. Cat dental disease causes pain, inflammation and tooth loss. It can also lead to systemic infection, affecting the entire body.

Poor dental health causes many health problems for cats such those affecting the kidney and liver. Periodontal disease affects the gums and supportive tissues. Bone and ligaments are destroyed, causing pain and inflammation. Sometimes your cat can have periodontal disease without you knowing it. Improving cat dental health is possible with a few simple changes.

  • Inspect your cat's teeth and gums regularly. There should be no swelling or redness. If you see any signs of inflammation, pus or loose teeth, the cat should be taken to the veterinarian. Periodontal disease can develop if not treated.

  • Understand cat dental health and disease. By knowing the signs and symptoms of disease, you'll know when your cat needs to be seen by the vet. Some common cat dental diseases are gingivitis, ulcers and periodontal disease.

  • Brush your cat's teeth daily. Brushing less often is okay, at least every three days. Use a cat toothbrush and toothpaste formulated for cats. Do not use human toothpaste as it can make cats extremely sick. Cats can be gradually trained to accept teeth brushing. First, allow the cat to taste the toothpaste and become familiar with the brush. Brush gently.

  • Use cotton swabs as an alternative. Cotton swabs can be substituted for the cat toothbrush or used in combination. In addition, salt water can be used.

  • Take your cat to the veterinarian for a dental exam. The vet will be able to diagnose gingivitis or periodontal disease early.

  • Provide chew toys. Cats can chew on them while making teeth strong. It also helps to clear away plaque buildup. This also massages the gums.

  • Give your cat dental treats. These assist in removing plaque buildup and tarter. Dental treats also provide minerals and vitamins beneficial to good cat dental health.
