- Check the weather before you hike. Rainy weather will cause the hiking trail to become muddy, which will cause you to slip if you are only wearing running footwear. Hiking boots are more suitable for this type of weather.
- Wear running footwear that is lightweight, and wear socks keep moisture away from your feet. If your feet become too sweaty, it will cause you to slip and fall.
- Make sure the running footwear has a ridged rubber sole, instead of a smooth one. A ridged sole will not slip as easily while you are walking on a hiking trail.
- Wear the shoes for a while before you hike in them. Test that the soles are not too flat. Scuff your shoe on the ground and see if it slides easily. If it does, the running footwear may not be the right type to hike in. If you are purchasing new running footwear, be sure to tell the salesman you will be hiking in the shoes.
