How to Help Law Enforcement
In our society everyone needs help in order to perform at an optimal level, and law enforcement is no exception. There are countless ways to help law enforcement without interfering with their busy schedules and taking time away from more pertinent issues.
Research within your local area to find out if there are any established community orientated policing programs. There are various programs at both the state and federal government level that sponsor training sessions that give citizens first hand knowledge of what law enforcement agencies do. Although these programs will not make you a police officer, they will assist you with establishing a neighborhood watch, citizens corps or other community based program.
Report any crime that you witness to law enforcement as soon as possible. Most agencies have a “tips” hotline that allows citizens to confidentially give information concerning crimes. The faster the perpetrator is caught, the less time they will have to commit another crime.
Provide financial assistance to families of law enforcement officers to assist with funeral and emergency assistance cost. This can be done by donating to charity or participating in fundraising efforts. Helping to carry some of the financial burden will allow members of the agency to operate with less stress and concentrate more on fighting crime and protecting citizens.
Contact your local law enforcement agency to find out how you can volunteer your time. Volunteers are able to assist with crowd control, participate in search-and-rescue efforts and work staff community policing stations as well as countless other tasks.
