How to Get a Free Download to Unzip a Folder

When downloading files while browsing the Internet or attachments included in your email, it is common to come across a compressed or zipped file folder. This allows the file to take up considerably less space and be transferred quicker than an uncompressed file. Unzipping a folder is quick and easy with free software available for download on the Internet.

Things you will need:



  • A zipped file or folder

  • Igor Pavlov’s free 7-zip utility—Available at http://www.7-zip.org/


Installing 7-Zip



  1. Download 7-Zip by navigating to the webpage listed above in your preferred Internet browser.

  2. Choose the 32-bit or 64-bit version, depending on your computer configuration. If you are unsure, the 32-bit version will provide maximum compatibility.

  3. Locate the downloaded installation file in your file browser.

  4. Double click the file and follow to prompts to install 7-zip.


Unzipping a Folder or File



  1. Locate the compressed folder that you would like to unzip using your file browser.

  2. Right click the file.

  3. Move the cursor “7-zip” on the context menu provided.

  4. Click “Open Archive.” This will open the 7-zip File Browser

  5. Click “Extract” on the button bar located at the top of the window.

  6. Choose a destination by clicking the “…” button and selecting a folder.

  7. Click “OK.”

  8. Wait for the progress bar to complete. The window should close automatically when completed.

  9. Close the 7-Zip window by clicking the “X” button in the upper corner.



Associating Compressed File Extensions with 7-Zip


While it is not required, associating common compressed file extensions with the 7-Zip utility can allow for easier opening and unzipping of compressed files in the future. Doing this only requires a few steps and will allow you to double-click any compressed file to open it within 7-Zip.



  1. Launch 7-Zip. This can be found on your desktop or Start Menu. It should be located under “All Programs” followed by “7-Zip.”

  2. Click “Tools” on the menu bar at the top of the 7-Zip window.

  3. Click the “System” tab at the top of the Options window.

  4. Review the available file extensions and select any you wish to open with 7-Zip by clicking the checkbox next to it. Commonly used compression types include 7z, arj, bz2, bzip2, rar, tar and zip.

  5. Click “OK.”

  6. Close the 7-Zip window by clicking the “X” button.
