How to Format a USB Memory Stick Storage Device
USB memory sticks can be used to back up files on your computer. Over time, the memory stick can become filled with unwanted files, broken registry files, and temporary files. You can format the USB memory stick storage device to remove these unwanted files, and keep it running at its full capacity.
- Connect the USB memory stick to your computer by plugging it into an available USB port. A window will automatically open on your screen.
- Select “Open device to view files” and a list of the files currently residing on the USB memory stick will display.
- Back up the files that you want to keep currently on the memory stock. When you format it, all files are automatically deleted. Copy and paste the files somewhere else on your hard drive that you do not want to be deleted.
- Click the “Up” folder icon button when you are finished backing up the files. The root drives on your computer will be displayed.
- Right-click the USB memory stick, and click “Format.” A new window will open showing you the different formatting options available.
- Check that the file system is set correctly, and that the capacity is correct. Most USB memory sticks are formatted with FAT32.
- Enter the Volume Label name, and then click the “Format” button. It will now erase the files currently on the memory stick, and reset it. This should only take a few minutes to complete. When it is completed, your memory stick will be completely empty.
- Place the files you backed up earlier back onto the memory stick if you desire.
