How to Find a Property Management Company

When it's time to find a property management company, diversify your approach for best results. Ask for the recommendations of your social network. Look for advertisements in local newspapers or real estate magazines. The Internet and your local phone book can also be useful resources.

  • Pay attention to property management signs in the neighborhood. Commercial properties, in particular, often have signs with phone numbers of managing companies. Contact these companies to determine if they offer the services you need.

  • Ask other real estate owners. People in your family, at work or in the community may have properties that they hire a company to manage. Inquire about their satisfaction with the companies and whether they would recommend their services.

  • Look for property management ads in newspapers. In the real estate section of the local paper there may be ads from local property managers.

  • Call property management companies in the area. Find their phone numbers online or in the phone book. When you take this approach, you are essentially cold calling without a recommendation. Visit the company's website in advance to determine if it is a potential fit.

  • Screen property managers. Speak to at least several companies before choosing one. Reviewing the terms of each contract is an important part of selecting a company. Some may charge more than others but deliver superior service.

  • Inquire about the level of autonomy. If a property manager constantly calls you in regards to small decisions, this may become a hassle. Assess the company for its sound judgment and ability to independently handle important matters.
