How to Find Subsidized Housing

Subsidized housing is a type of housing that is offered by the Department of Urban Development, commonly referred to as HUD. This type of housing is in place to allow low income individuals, as well as those with disabilities a safe and stable place to live.

  1. Determine where the nearest HUD office to your home is located by either looking in your local phone book in the government section found in the front of the phone book. You can also perform an Internet search using your preferred search engine and the keywords "HUD office," or "Department of Urban Development" along with the name of the city and state in which you live.

  2. Visit the HUD office nearest to your home to inquire about subsidized housing in the area. They should be able to provide you with a list of low income, senior or disability apartments or houses that are eligible for subsidized pricing.

  3. Ask for an application. You will need to fill out the application entirely, so it is a good idea to bring your Social Security number, tax papers or proof of any income with you when visiting the HUD office.

  4. They will review your application and let you know if you are eligible to receive subsidized housing. Your income and the amount of people in your family will be reviewed to see if you meet the income guidelines that are established by HUD.

  5. Visit the individual properties that are available and see if they have any openings. If they do not currently have any openings, it is a good idea to fill out an application anyway so that you can be put on the waiting list for when a property becomes vacant.
