How to Find Reliable Dog Walkers

Dogs not only need exercise, but need social contact with other dogs.  By hiring a dog walker, you will give your dog an opportunity to exercise as well as socialize with other dogs.  This is much better than leaving your dog indoors and alone, where pent-up energy can become destructive.

• Decide whether you want your dog to walk in a pack or individually.  If your dog is smaller and gets along well with other dogs, then you might consider using a dog walker that walks dogs in packs.  The plus side is that you will pay less for such a service, but the downside of a dog walker who walks dogs in packs is that your dog will not receive the same amount of attention as if it were walked alone.  Although some dog walkers have packs as large as 12 animals, you can also consider smaller packs of two to four animals.


• Get referrals for reliable dog walkers.  You can get referrals for dog walkers from your friends, as well as other people you meet at the dog park.  When you go to see your vet, he or she can usually recommend a wide range of dog services, including dog walkers who are reliable and in your area.


• Conduct interviews with dog walkers in person to assess compatibility.  You are trusting the welfare of your dog to a stranger, which is why it's important to conduct an interview with the person.  Another way to assess how well the dog walker does the job is to ask for referrals.  This will allow you to contact other customers who have used the dog walker.
