How to Donate Moving Boxes
If you have excess cardboard boxes, there are many options for donating them. Many people will be happy to take the boxes off your hands. No one likes to pay for things that are available for free, so donate your boxes and make a neighbor happy.
- Post on craigslist in the “Free Stuff” section. There are always people needing moving boxes, and your item probably will not last long after it is posted. If you do not want to go through the formality of meeting people in public, you can simply post a message like the following: “Five 30”x18” moving boxes available curbside at the corner of Harrison and 8th. First come, first served.”
- Post on Freecycle. Freecycle is a community site where people give away stuff they no longer need. Find your local Freecycle site and post to its member message board. Freecycle etiquette usually dictates that the person needing the item comes to your residence or place of business to pick up the item.
- Find a local business that specializes in reselling cardboard boxes. These companies make a profit by reselling used boxes, but most give money to charitable organizations. In Seattle there is karmaboxx.com, while in New York City there is usedcardboardboxes.com.
- Find local artists who can use them. Artists can use cardboard boxes not only for storing stuff, but some actually can use the cardboard in their artwork as well. Check for an artist co-op in your area to see if they have any need for boxes.
- Ask your friends if they need boxes. They might not be moving, but cardboard boxes are useful for storage as well as kindling for starting fires in colder climates.
