How to Direct a Rap Music Video
Rap music videos are of bigger and bolder style. Directing a rap music video isn't different from any other music video except everything is a little extra. It requires a certain level of style and skill, but if you are serious about directing, you will see your ideas come to life.
- Find a small experienced crew. Most times your first music video will be low budget, depending on the budget you have. You will not have the money for a large crew, so a handful of people you trust and have experience will get the job done.
- Choose a private location. If you can find a free location like a lavish home or outdoors, that is best. A lot of rappers brag what is in the lyrics, so you must make sure the set and props match and look the part.
- If you don't have your own equipment you can rent from someone who does. It will be much cheaper than trying to rent equipment from a business.
- Try to keep the video very simple, but based on the rap song. You will not need to add in any special effects or a lot of props. To save money and time you can make it a block party video.
- Shoot the video outside if you can. You will save money if you shoot outside rather than lighting interior shots.
- Look for the best-looking women willing to work for free or on a small budget. This shouldn't be hard since there are many young women looking to be in videos.
- Stay on a tight schedule. You will not have time to waste and may be working with only several hours to get the rap video done.
